Images are not the format their file names say
An image's first bytes say one format while its file name says another (a .jpg that is a PNG, or an image address that returns an HTML page). It was fetched without asking for WebP or AVIF, so a CDN that converts on request is not counted. Browsers usually cope; image indexers and some clients trust the name, and an image address that returns a page is a broken image. 4,923 sites had this problem when we measured them in the last 7 days. The list gives each one with its domain, name where known, platform, every technology we detected, its A–F grade with all its findings, location where known, and what it serves AI crawlers.
